Hi dear friends, readers and still growing humanist fans. Few days ago, you made me a very happy man, writer and humanist photographer. I posted a Dose of Happiness (N°201) about love with that main idea : if you are not successful yet, you might need a boost of motivation to do what you were too lazy to do. And that additional motivation could come from being in love and having child to raise, feed, protect. In addtion, you tremendously loved the adorable couple I took in pictures while I was walking around in Brooklyn, last year. I wrote in this article that I met them because I decided that day to follow my heart instead of my rationality : capturing the magic of Brooklyn rather than doing usual street style photography in Manhattan.
Heart VS Raison, Passion VS Money, long term vision VS short term vision : that’s the dilemma and hard choices we are all confronted to at some point in our lives. From my early childhood, I choosed my path, my way of life : to always do what I love, what I feel right.
– “But Kamel, you loose a lot of opportunities if you only do what you love. Your humanist values and natural unphotoshoped pictures make you loose a lot of opportunities like working for fashion magazines”.
– A job that doesn’t fit my humanist values is never a lost opportunity my friend. It’s simply not a opportunity at all for me. Point. I choose the ones I want to work with. I don’t care about how famous a magazine, media or whatever is : they must fit to my humanist values because I want to work WITH people, not FOR people.
– “But you are not rich Kamel !”
– “I am richer than you think my friend, because I don’t mesure my wealth in term of money and fame but in term of achievements, experience, skill, creativity. What matters to me is not being featured in the cover of VOGUE but is if I made someone’s day better. If I helped people to find the confidence to achieve their own dreams. Because I stick to these values I refused many times to work for magazines and websites, some of them very famous. And I feel good about it because I see her smile on her bicycle, and I konw that I am doing the righ thing, for her, for me, for you.”
Believe me my friend, there are invisible forces around you that are waiting to reward you in very unexpected ways. No scientist can explain it but all successful people have experienced that : when you follow humanist values, when you do what you love, what you think is moraly right, when you don’t settle, the univers rewards you. All my life, I have been so many times rewarded for having said NO to great opportunities because it was not for me. And the consequences of my “NOs” were so much better that wat I could have feared of financialy lost
That day of may 2012, I prefered to walk around for the first time in Brooklyn, in the Heights neighborhood. Not as stylish as Soho in Manhattan, as you can guess. But my filter was not a “street style” filter, it was a “humanist” filter. And then I saw her, 100 m to my left, at the fire light. It was red. A sign from God, if exists”. I ran faster than Usain Bolt and start to shoot even before asking her. I use some funny bit and my french accent achieved her t understand that she was with a nice photographer. That moment worths so much more than a fashion shooting for any famous magazine. I was alone, no assistant, no fake and stupid stage, a real women with her adorable kids. Her HAPPINESS was the best outfit and make up. In addition, her coolness made her gorgeous.
And that my friends are the kind of rewards that the univers is ready to offer you if you follow your values, if you do what your heart tells you to do, if you don’t settle. Money must not be your first priority. Just find your niche, be the best and be faithful in the laws of attraction.
Thank you for reading me. May this new Dose of Happiness brightne your day, your life. Best regards and see you tomorrow for a new sweet encounter.
