Hi everybody. In this new Dose of Happiness N°223 (already!), I would like to talk to you in my bad english (Remember, I’m french) about models. When I was working in a french female magazine7 years ago, I was disgusted by how they were counterfeiting reality by over photoshopping pictures of models. I was so disgusted by that and their greed values that I quit only 10 months later. Coming from TV where I’ve directed 120+ video reportages and funny short movies, the gap of creativity was so huge that I was happy to leave and be free again to use my creativity. I need to learn, to improve my skills and spirituality to feel alive and be happy as a human being. Money, statuts, fame mean nothing for me compared to spirituality and creating great things that make this world better.
When I started Style and the City, almost 6 years ago, I promised myself to never take pictures of fashion runways: too boring. Before they discovered Style and the City and my style of photography, street style photographers from magazines were asking models to pose at the exits of the fashion shows to take them in picture. So uncreative, so stupid. Models are human beings, not coats racks !! Therefore I tried to find a way to present you models in a natural way, a way that will create a real connection between you and them, a way that will show you who they are really. And models loved what they started to see on Style and the City. And I loved them in return even more. I don’t see them as models, but as little sisters. Remember that 90% of them aren’t 25 !! Therefore, my first filter is “Affection”.
During fashion weeks, models play the game of street style photographers. But on the street, it’s not the same at all. And I understand them. Men are attracted by beautiful faces and bodies, so I understand that a pretty girl seeing a man taking her in picture could think that he is a pervert. Especially if she has a very short skirt, lol. Because of that, what you might not know is that taking in picture a model, on the go, on the street is a real challenge. Because they are paid to be taken in picture, because they don’t know me, because too many men try to flirt with them.
I will never blame a pretty women to be afraid of me. I can blame a disrespectful and scornful person but never a person who is just afraid. That’s why I decided from the get go to not take one shot pictures, but a series of pictures that will tell you a story and show you the evolution of a person. Because when a person changes, from being scared to being kind, generous, smiling, that’s when you understand that our society could be friendlier if we just open our heart, trust the other. A picture of a bag, shoe, jacket, will never explain you that, will never help you to understand what life is about.
Thank you very much to all the models I know and don’t know that offered me their generosity. Your pictures are not beautiful because you have a beautiful face. They are beautiful because you have a great heart. I wish you the happiness you deserve. See you soon.
