Hi everybody, hi dear readers, friends and newcomers. New York fashion week is over but not for you. Thousands of memories are bumping in my head. Some were sweet, others were not. Just check this first picture and look how street style photographers have invaded the location. At any fashion show location, the situation was the same : an ocean of street style photographers was making almost impossible for attendees to walk normally, relaxely and safely find their ways to the fashion show. I noticed that more and more women from fashion were bothered by photographers attitudes and would not stop anymore. I couldn’t be more pleased, lol. Life has always been more beautiful to capture than bags, shoes…
Over the 6 years attending fashion weeks, from Paris to New York and Milan, I developed friendship with some adorable women like Turkey Vogue fashion editor Ece Sukan. You can enjoy our many encounters and her natural charm in the search page (top right of the menu). Some women are so cool that I proposed them a game : I challenged myself to surprise them in every of our encounter in order to always offer them unique photographs and sweet memories. Whether it is by hiding myself to take in picture a candid moment or by finding new angles or tell a story, I made myself clear about my art : never take the same pictures, always do differently from an encounter to another one. That’s the only way for me to learn to be a better humanist street style photographer, that’s the only way for me to honor those who offer me their generosity and trust. If I have an advice to give to the new photographers : women don’t need another picture of their outfit. They have been taken in pictures thousands times. How another picture of their outfit will make their day better ?. A smile will always be a women’s best outfit. A sweet memories will remain in mind for years.
We are at Diesel fashion show. The number of photographers has doubled since last year. It’s just insane. It’s impossible to take a beautiful natural picture with out having a bag, a shoulder, a head in your frame. For many former great street style photographers like my friend Eddy Newton, the only way to get his pictures right was to catch as soon as possible his “models”, before other photographers make it impossible for him to take his pictures. I like Eddy because contrary to 99% of street style photographers, he always try to create something new.
How do I handle the situation with so many street style photographers around parasitizing moments of life and my frame ? I try to create artistic photographs that would reveal women’s natural glamour. I used the disturbing elements around me as part of my art, my photographs. Incorporating these parasitic elements creates a mood, a story in addition to show the reality of a moment. I’ve been a journalist for year for french TV and a writer : telling stories is what I love most. I will never sacrifice a story for an easy picture that could be easily sold to magazines.
What I like about Ece Sukan, is that not only she is a gorgeous woman, but also that she is always kind and smiling to everybody. And for that she deserves that I surprise her again and again. LOL.
Believe me when I tell you that there is more street style photographers than guests attending fashion shows. Unfortunately new street style photographers don’t embrace the rules that former street style photographers like me tried to establish. The first one : don’t screw other photographers’ pictures on purpose to get your picture. As you will see it in this series, the new generation of photographers don’t give a shit of values like “RESPECT”, “INTEGRITY”, “LEARNING”.
What makes our life great is that everyone of us has the opportunity to make his next days better than the previous ones. We have the opportunities to learn more that what we knew yesterday. That’s the magic of life : we can learn and be better than yesterday, by getting more knowledge, skills, and humanity. That’s why I never go in front of other’s photographers lenses even if I know I would take a great picture. Because I would learn nothing as an artist.
If there’s something that I want you to learn about my work and achievement on Style and the City it’s that my friends : learning is the key to happiness, not having. The fact that you can progress in your life in many fields is what give you hope and the feeling of a worthy existence. How many wealthy people are bored of their life ? Many. As I wrote it many times here, the reward is not the destination but the journey.
I never cheated and screwed other photogarpher’s shoots. Why ? Because I took these situations as great opportunities to learn by doing differently. Learning what make sa woman so glamorous is so more exciting and enjoyable than taking a picture of her bag that I can’t thank God enough for not having made me a greed person obsessed by money or fame. I thank God, if exists, to have made me born in a humble family among lots of brothers and sisters. I am sure it shaped my values.
As for you dear readers, thank you very much for reading me despite my very bad english. Now that I live in New York, give me 6 months to speak like…. like… George Clooney. Have a great day. In the coming days, I will show you how I capture women’s natural grace.
