50 new pics tomorrow : my street style is not just about style, it’s about the beauty of soul !
Many people ask me on Facebook, through e-mail, or in the street advices about doing street style. I am very honored, because i don’t technically consider myself as a good photographer. I’m gonna go along because life is not about « taking » but « sharing ».
I can remember when I started shooting pictures of street style in july 2007, street style blogs at this time were The Sartorialist and Face hunter. There was also Still In Berlin. Their common thing: nice people, dazzling beauties, and high quality pictures. I did not recognize myself in these pictures, and couldn’t even think about shooting this type of picture. Moreover, copying others is not part of my values. Where would be my identity if i would?!! And my pride?
At this time, I was coming from the television world, where as reporter-columnist I had directed barely 120 reports on television backstages. More than simply interviewing celebrities at a table, what I liked most was to shoot them in their world, because it’s in these moments that celebs show themselves the most. What thrilling moments I have shared with them! But HUSSSSH!! I cannot tell you everything. lol!
I had the idea of doing street style, not in discovering blogs of the Sartorialist or Face Hunter, but discovering Jamel Debbouze and Melissa Theuriau (Top fench comedian and most beautiful french TV host) on Paris Match’s cover in april 2007. More to read in “Birth of Style and the City“. They were shot in action, naturally, Melissa was stunning, Jamel was doubtful but his cool style caught my attention right away. That was at this very same moment that it triggered in my mind: show that « real » life is as beautiful as a fashion show, and that « real » people have as much generosity and personality as style to offer.
So I investigated in browsing the Internet, discovered street style blogs. My first surprise: I noticed that everyone tried to do the same as The Sartorialist. But there is only ONE Sartorialist. Copied by all, but never equalled! What difference could I bring to street style, that could match my values? For me, a picture must enhance one’s style and one’s soul. What to do? At first, i didn’t know. I had this one question in mind, the problem, but not the answer. In fact, it came step by step… My first pictures did not satisfy me, because i had this impression of stealing people’s image: ok, i got a style, readers were happy, and then waht? In what way did i make this person enjoy a good moment? In what way did i make my readers like them? And this simple question made me understand what I had to do.
For style fans, it might be a useless consideration: for loads of readers, what matters is to satisfy their eyes, to browse from one street style blog to another to get free nice styles to look at, without considering states of mind of the shot model or photographer. Am not interested in these readers. The readers that interest me and that I am devoted to, and will dedicate my website to, are the ones who share my vision of photography; this photo that brings emotions other than the simple attractive pleasure of style. For that type of photo, style isn’t enough: you gotta go for beautiful souls hunting. It’s very easy to take a photo of a stylish person, you just need to push the button. But having beautiful souls that make your picture wonderful: it’s not easy. It will take you, young photographer, a lot of generosity to get some in return; for your picture to be the one that your readers will love the person on it. That’s your only goal! Follow these ruels and have a look to what you can do with a 239 € camera HERE ! . A camera don’t give the soul to a picture. You do it ! (thank you very much Mario for your complicity. I am very glad that you appreciate my work)
But what will make a photo so unique, is the emotion that it will bring, the script that you will right to it, the love and respect that you will give to this person; the communion which binds you…Even when it’s a simple pair of shoes. This pair has its story,its context..Your turn to right a life to it, knowing how to place yourself and push the button at the right moment, taking some more pictures too…
These values are the ones that will make the difference between others photos,
and yours,
between paparazzis and you who probe Eva Herzigova’s soul to make your readers go in empathy with her…
Every single day, every single shooting out, every single photo is for me an occasion to think about the messages I want to pass on to my readers. There have been several since the beginning: “le grand secret de la beauté, c’est le bonheur !” for instance.

Car quand tu appliques ces règles, c’est là que tu obtiens tes plus belles photos…
Certains m’ont critiqué amicalement de ne prendre que des gens beaux et stylés. Je leur répondrais : effectivement, je ne photographie que les gens très beau et très stylés, à l’image de la vie ! lol (j’ai rajouté le lol car je suis même pas sur que ces critiques auront compris l’humour, relol, 3 millions d’entrées pour Sophie Marceau !)

Je suis très « touché » par la façon dont tu décris ton travail, tu es un poete de la mode, et avec toi, n’importe quelle photos devient une oeuvre d’art.
J’ai eu l’occasion de voir le travail du Sartorialist ou de Face Hunter, et laisse moi te dire qu’ils ne t’arrivent pas a la cheville.
Je suis ton travail avec assiduité depuis plusieurs mois, et a chaque fois, tu rend le monde plus beau et plus humain.
Ton blog est un vrai rayon de soleil quotidien, avec toi, je recommence a croire en un monde meilleur.
Tu dis que The Sartorialist n’est pas imitable…il n’y a qu’un Sartorialist..honnêtement on peut dire la même chose de toi! Il n’y a qu’un Style & The city, ou la partie importante n’est pas seulement les photos mais les histoires derrières et la philosophie unique de ton blog! bravo!

Ce que j’aime à chaque fois que je passe ici, c’est à quel point tes photos montrent qu’il y a un visage humain à la mode, et c’est grâce à des photographes comme toi que les gens de la mode ce sont rendu compte qu’il n’y avait pas que les podiums!

Que dire mis à part que tu as juste TOTALEMENT raison …. Je déteste prendre des gens qui posent …. Je ne suis pourtant qu’une « photographe (si j’ose m’appeler ainsi) amateur » et donc je ne fais pas un boulot fulgurant, ni pro, mais vraiment lorsque on photographie sur le vif, on fait bien souvent ressortir la vraie nature de la personne photographiée …. Ca n’a rien à voir avec tout ce que l’on peut voir dans les revues ou magazines. C’est bien pour cela que je ne préviens jamais personne que je vais photographier pour que je puisse le faire discretement sans qu’ils s’en aperçoivent et faire ressortir leur vrai « eux ». C’est une sensibilité qui n’est pas toujours donnée à tout le monde. Et je trouve que la photo du portrait de la jeune fille brune (avec le flou devant) est juste parfaite. Pour moi c’est ce genre de photo que l’on peut qualifier de parfaite et non celle d’un photographe faisant poser une personne en calculant tout au mm près, sans aucun « pet » de travers !
C’est ma vision de la photo, ma façon de faire. Chacun la sienne et j’aprecie la tienne en tout cas. CONTINUE AINSI !

Un bon photographe qui fait poser des modèles essayera de déclencher des émotions naturelles audits modèles, et de les chopper au vol. Le travail en reportage et en session posée n’est pas très éloigné : dans les deux cas, il faut être alerte, et rapide.
Après, seule l’image compte. Son mode d’obtention, secondaire.

Je lis ton blog depuis une bonne demie heure et je trouve tes propos et ta philosophie geniale.
Je fais une ecole de photo et je constate que la photographie de mode est pris en otage par des gens tres select qui se la pete!!
Donc je suis heureuse de lire de tel propos, il permette de voir qu’il y a des photographes qui lutte sans perdre leur ame.Donc bravo !!
Tu as du style ,avec simplicité !! c’est ca ton arme ,c’est ce qui les tuent !!!
