Yes Alexis Bryan, I ask you this question to you cause I am sure you’ll have a clever answer. Now, you’vee seen my work Alexis, you have noticed that my style of photography is not based upon taking in pictures clothes but rather upon capturing moments of life that brighten people’s personality. Cause for me, style is just the cloth of your personality and photogenic comes from generosity. I’ve learnt that early on when I started Style and the City. I have no work strong enough to thank this adorable french lady to have showned me what kind of pictures I should take and how beautiful humanist photography was compared to fashion “photoshoped” photography. I called this Lady “Annie Lennox“.
This post is about sharing with you one aspect of my vision about street style photography. Fashion week always offer me amazing opportunities to learn more and improve my art. Those of you who read my Daily Dose of Happiness posts know now Alexis Bryan. You know her as a very kind and cool woman and also as a stylish and beautiful lady who will always offer you a sweet smile, even under the snow, lol. A new encounter always mean a new way to take pictures for me in order to understand what makes women attractive.
So she was there, standing, posing for the photographer…
Karl is one of the street style photographer I love most : the most stylish photographer of all, the kindest one, and unfortunately for me, very charming, lol. If I see him taking his pictures, I never interfere, or join him cause as you know it know, being creative and able to create one own kind of pictures is what make you a “real” photographer. Karl is at the left of my frame, Alexis at the right. The basic thought would have been to wait that Karl finish his shooting to place myself in front of Alexis and then take front pictures of her. But NO. Beauty, glamour, sex appeal are a multidimensional factors with endless possibilities and surprises. Beautiful white dress, mid thighs, naked should, position of teh legs, position of the back, sexy high heels… Face from “sideway” (sorry if the translation is not right. You can correct me)… all these elements made Alexi Bryan more attractive for me than if I was taking a front picture. For some of you, it could be not the case, and I am fine because taste and colors… you know what I mean. What you must understand is that as a photographer, you always must explore different ways if you want to learn and improve your art. You’ll be amazed by the oceans of emotion you’ll go through. Always try to be different, never follow the trend.
“Hey Kamel ! This girl is too pretty, it’s too easy to take that kind of exemples !”
Keep cool buddy, breath, cook some pasta and come back after you diggested. LOL. Yes, she is pretty, I know that cause guess what ? I am not blind and remember : I took her in picture.
When the person I take in picture is “obviously” pretty, I try to take in pictures not a face, but emotions. My goal as a photographer is to go beyond the obvious by capturing what my personal emotional filters, strings will invite me to take in picture. And because those filters are emotional, I know that my pictures will be unique. Unique for me. Because I didn’t click stupidly on the knob of my camera, but listened to my feelings. I didn’t focused on her style but on how I can reveal something touching about her. When you love photography sincerely, not in the hope of being famous, you’ll start to never feel satisfied with your pictures. You want to constantly improve your art. When you start to feel like that, don’t worry, God will reward you with great emotions and stories to remember.
Eye contact is not necessary for me to live something “special”. The background of my pictures, the way the body move and human interactions are other factors that I try to master. Sometime they are simultaneously present in the same time, same place. And it’s very exciting.
Few minutes after I met Alexis Bryan, I saw a bucn of people coming towards me. Behind teh first men, I could see blond hair. Let’s try and see what happens ! Click ! Ok, I see her. She looks in deep cogitation. I will not disturb her. What can make my pictures nice ? OK, the way she bend her haid, the way her blond strand of hair swing and hide hald of her face… OK, let’s try to capture a sweet moment. And don’t forget to take care of the background !
Friendship is one of my favorite filters bacause friendship is often associated with happiness. Remember Nicolas Phelbs and Marina Larroude laughing, remember the sexy girls on bike, remember the coolitude of Elin Kling, remember the womanizer James Godlstein and gorgeous Charlotte Gollard, remember Shiana Turini and friends, remember Kate under the rain…
Friendship is as easy as difficult to take in pictures. Why ? The more people are in a picture, the more chance you have that while some has his eayes open, the other one not. I hope you understand what I mean in my very bad english. Once I live in New York, I promise to to speak and write better.
In that serie, you’ll notice that in the begining of our encounter, the pictures are not great. the position of the sun and shaddow the position of the friends, my position… not good at all. I could have stoped them but it’s not what I do. Because I accept to fail, it always make me wonder how I can bounce back. Behind be a street unders shaddow. I will remove the hard sun/shaddow factor. If I decide to follow them, I must make sure that they will be closer to each other. A beter situation would be that they would walk and talk. The best case would be that they walk closer, talk and have fun. Can I be the detonator ? Hummm. I have an idea : I’m gonna tease them. The expected consequence : they laugh about what I would have told them.
Now, disocver if I was right…
Thank you very much for reading me everyday. I love what I do and more importantly, I love to share my though and what I learn from humanist photography. Many people share with me their knowledge and I think it my duty to share mine with you. I know my thoughts sound confuse sometime (many times !) and I apologize. My mother langage is french but as I want to quit France for New York as soon as possible, I try to practise as often as I can.
I thank all these women who knowing me or not offer me great journeys into the world of humanist street style photography.
Alexis Bryan, thank you very much once again. See you soon. Ps : I’ll try to hide myself even better, haha.
