A lot of things have been told and written about the current young generation : good and bad. I meet and have met amazing young people. But at the end of the day, if I had to compare the good and the bad, I start to be sad and want to cry. Because according to what I see, to what I hear, I am afraid of what our futur could be. What saddens me the most is the lack of RESPECT and lack of CLEVERNESS. Everyday I see act of disrespect and stupidity and unfortunately they are more numerous than the act of generosity and cleverness that I see. The current young generation, called “Y generation” has born with internet : everythink is available quickly for free without any effort. They love that : you can have so much without doing a lot. And for free ! A dream ! Unfortunately, real life is not a computer screen and human beings, data that appears on your screen as soon as you ask for it.
The difference between the virtual world and the real world is human values : RESPECT, LOVE, GENEROSITY, WORK ETHIC, PASSION and COMPASSION. But too many people prefere to dream their life rather than living their dreams. Living one’s dream implies hard workd and many sacrifices. And too many of that “virtual” generation hate the taste of hard work and sacrifice. GREED and SELFISHNESS is far more easier to embrace. But as wise actor Will Smith told it : “There is no shortcut to success”. To illustrate in pictures my thought, I choose this following story. We are at New York fashion week…
A woman is walking quickly on the street. Later on, after the shooting, I understood that she was a model running to a casting or fashion show (many of them have 2 and even 3 fashion shows or castings per day during one week. A crazy schedule. They are constantly runing). I can see her coming from a distance. Ok, she is in a hurry : let’s capture that feeling. But I also see that some young photographers are waiting for stylish women to take picture as well. I thought that they would be clever and respectful enough to not stop a person that is in a rush. That’s just common sense for me, not as a photographer but as a human being. As a photographer is up to me to adapt my photography to the situation and find a way to capture people’s natural grace and beauty in any situation, without disturbing them. But what happened is not what I expected. The young street style photographer forced the woman to stop. It made me very angry. Why ? Because this young street style photographer surrendered. She could have used this situation to improve her photography but she surrendered. Instead of learning, instead of offering a great picture to the woman she prefered to TAKE. She thought about her personal interest first.
SELFHISNESS is what is killing our societey. I was so sad that I programmed myself to capture this woman’s natural grace to proove you my point of view. When you think about your place in our society, think yourself as a giver, not a taker. Give ! As mother Teresa told it : “We can’t all do great things, but we can do small things with great love.” See your life on a long term period : don’t look for the quick easy and immediate satisfaction you’ll get by ripping or bothering someone. Life is just energy. The bad energy you send, someday life will make you pay for it. As in the same way, life will reward the great things you do. As a photographer you could think that being published in a magazine is your reward. If you think so, you have a tiny idea of what you want your life to be. If you do what thousands people already do, your life is just and average life.
Never stop learning, never stop to elevate your soul and skills. Never stop giving. Be a GIVER, not a TAKER : an amazing life of discovery and an ocean of happiness that you never had expected will make you realize how blind you were and how amazing your life can be. Think about what you can bring to this world and not what you can take from it. Think about your legacy and what you will say to your children when they will ask you :”Dad, mom, what did you do to make this world better ? What great lesson can I learn from you ?”. And now, tell me if this women is not more beautiful when we respect her and try to improve our skills, when we “GIVE” !
