Hi everybody. I hope this new Daily Dose of Happiness / 50 shades of grace will find you fine. This post is aimed to explain to the aspiring humanist photographer how to make the difference between a street style picture and a humanist picture. I can summarize that in 3 words : TELL A STORY, BE DIFFERENT, PRACTICE.
New York fashion week, FEB. 2013 : We are at Ralph Lauren’s entrance fashion show. Lots of stylish people like Miroslava Duma, Giovanna battaglia, June Ambrose, Chiara Ferragni, Lauren Remington Platt... and of course far more street style photographers, dying to take their pictures.
TELL A STORY
The difference between a picture without story and a picture that tells a story is huge. Why ? Because when you tell a story you include many elements in your story that brighten your picture. You can tell a story by integrating additional characters in your frame. But it’s not the only way to tell a story. EMOTION is a key part of a story. Ask Ekaterina Mukhina ! You can even tell a story with just 1 or 2 characters : just focuse on their relationship. Ask these 2 lovely little girl friends !
The first consequence of trying to be different (in a good way of course) is that you’ll have to work harder than any others. Working harder than others is always rewarding in the long term because the skills you’ll get will stay for ever if you keep this mindset. Don’t think about the short term because it could hurt you. You’ll see people with more network and professional connections than you copying and stealing your work and you will think that life is unfair. I understand your feeling my dear friend, but what life taught me is that if a door is closed to you, it’s because it’s not the right door for you. Because you need money now and not later, you are afraid, scared and you start to hate those who copy you, sometime even in front of you. Tell yourself that what they get now is so small compared to what you gonna be able to create later by focusing on being creative, different. Someday it will pay off, because someday you will find a way to monetize your passion, your skills. The world has changed dramatically and the futur needs creative people. It’s inevitable. Be one of them ! Don’t loose faith. Do good and good will com back to you. BE DIFFERENT, YOU’LL MAKE THE WORLD BETTER THAN THEY WILL EVER BE ABLE TO MAKE IT.
I take more street style and fashion week pictures than anybody else in the world. Between the Daily Dose fo happiness (already 195 !!) the post (already 900 !!), the musical slideshows, the weekly album (86 pictures) to upload in my iPhone iPad fashion app, it’s a lot of content to provide. 200 000 pictures already taken since oct. 2007 !! If you’ve seen me working, you’ve realized it. Why do I take so many pictures and many pictures of the same person ? BECAUSE I try to understand how someone’s grace appears. I want to understand what makes a person naturaly beautiful, in any circumstances. Men, women, young, adult, different location, different light, different situations : I take pictures again and again. No flash (I hate that) no assistant, no photoshop (I hate that even more), just my filter : LOVE. During fashion weeks I see too many street style photographers behave like greed paparazzi and even parasites. If only you could see how they behave. At some point I had to tell to a photographer to stop harassing a woman that was in a hurry to go to a fashion show. The photographer was in front of the woman, her lense was litteraly at 30 cm of her face and she wouldn’t let her walk peacefully. I was disgusted. If only you could see the ambiance during the last day of New York fashion week at Calvin Klein, you would understand why we talk about street style more as a big circus than an art. The best way to not become a greed and stupid street style photographer is to practice again and again humanist photography. Understand what creates natural beauty and grace. By practicing, you’ll quickly understand when you can take a pictures or not. And most important : you will always RESPECT people. And they will reward you by offering you their respect. And your pictures will end different.
May that post touch your heart and spirit. You are born to make this world better, to give. Have a great day.
