New York fashion week here I am. I wasn’t sure to attend this edition as the insane amount of photographer makes my story telling work harder and harder. But it’s such a beautiful event, such an opportunity for me to capture moments and write new stories, to improve my work in addition to meet friends, fashion editors I like very much.
But my fashion week wouldn’t be so special without any issue. What about this edition’s issue ? I broke my Nikon D700 camera last year because water got into it (damned snow !). In Paris, a friend was kind enough to lend me one of his cameras. What he didn’t know is that this camera had a focus issue : it doesn’t focus on the spot you choose but few spot away. If I put the autofocus spot on your eyes, it would not focus on your eyes but few cm away. Meaning that your face would be slightly out of focus while the person in the background would be on focused. After noticed it the first day, I thought it was my fault, that I had lost my talent. As I didn’t edit that many pictures during the fashion week, I didn’t realized that this issue was constant. Until I got back to Paris and realized thousands pictures and faces were out of focus that I got mad. I went to the Nikon repair office : they confirmed that my autofocus has a big problem and that it would cost 250€ and 10 days to fix it. It would screw my coming Paris fashion week again. I have no choice : I must rent a new camera : 400€. Shit ! What fortunately saved 50% of my New York Fashion Week production ? STORIES.
Because of the insane amount of photographers, people are stopped every 5 m making harder to see real life moment lasting more than 30 sec. Because of that, stories are very scare now, making my story telling work very very hard. And if your camera has in addition a focus issue, no need to tell you how I felt after few days of shooting. But it’s a challenge and how I handle this challenge will make me a better photographer and man or not.
What saved me to overcome my camera issue ? People’s humanity. It’s easy to take a picture of an outfit. But how many outfit do you need to see to feel happy ? It never ends. But a smile can brighten your day and make you feel self confident and happy. I don’t know who this beautiful smile’s owner is, but I can tell you that : she is a wonderful person. Check out her story and let me know if her smile is not her most beautiful outfit.
There was at least 300 street style photographers during this New York fashion week. It’s a lot of competition, especially as the newcomers are greedier than the older generation of photographers. It saddens me a lot to see how street style photography changed over the years : form an artistic movement to a business movement bringing greed with it, as money always does. But let me tell you that my friends : no money, not great camera can create a beautiful smile like this. It’s your SOUL, who you are as a human being who will make you a great humanist photographer or not, no matter if your photographs are published or not. With humanist photography, no need stamp of approval from any media. The emotion you create are the only stamp of approval you need. Don’t forget that, don’t let your soul corrupted by greed. Draw smiles on people’s faces and make this world a better place, not a catalogue. Have a great day my friend.
